World Chain, the blockchain developed by the creators of the controversial Worldcoin (WLD) cryptocurrency, has officially gone live. The platform, headed by the World Foundation, is designed to prioritize real human users over bots, with over 15 million users already migrated or in the process of migrating to the new chain. The network aims to address issues of high fees and network congestion, providing humans with priority blockspace and offering free gas to its users.
The Human-centric Blockchain
The World Foundation announced World Chain in April, with the platform aiming to revolutionize how blockchains operate, particularly in terms of human-centric applications. This shift toward human verification is made possible by World ID, the on-chain protocol that offers anonymous identity verification through the much-discussed retina-scanning ‘orb’.
With a focus on financial inclusion, World Chain is particularly geared toward users in regions where cryptocurrencies provide vital financial tools, leading to a push in areas such as Africa and Asia, where Worldcoin had run into trouble over its storage of such data. The platform is backed by leading blockchain service providers, including Optimism, Alchemy, and Uniswap, which are helping to ensure that the network runs smoothly from day one.
Developers Welcomed
World Chain says that as well as benefiting users, its launch is also a major opportunity for developers, according to a representative from Alchemy:
World Chain allows developers to reach the largest verified human user base, unlocking new possibilities for financial apps and other on-chain services.
The project has attracted support from other blockchain projects such as Dune Analytics, Fireblocks, and Safe, which offer additional functionalities like data analysis, institutional custody, and multisignature wallet support.
Of course, like any blockchain, the proof will be in the pudding, with actual user numbers likely to be pored over in the coming weeks and months.
