- PUBG creator Brendan Greene has revealed metaverse gaming plans
- Greene is however not planning to integrate NFTs into his games
- Greene described existing metaverse platforms as “IP bubbles that might talk to each other” in the future
Brendan Greene, the creator of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), has revealed he’s developing a gaming-focused metaverse without NFTs. Developed by Greene’s game studio PlayerUnknown Productions, and scheduled for release this year, the metaverse platform will be known as Artemis. Greene thinks the current breed of metaverse platforms are just “IP bubbles that might talk to each other” in the future, an observation that echoes Ethereum co-founder’s previous views that most blockchain-based projects are largely centralized.
The Metaverse is “a 3D Internet”
In an interview with IGN, Greene defined the metaverse as “a 3D internet” adding that it should allow users to create interconnected worlds “operating on the same protocol, like HTTP.” He disclosed that he’s currently “testing grounds for the technology.”
The PUBG creator intends to make Artemis like the open internet but with some control features to moderate user interactions. According to Greene, the platform will lock out people who misbehave. However, instead of completely blocking them, Greene intends to turn rowdy users into ghosts who can see everything but can’t interact with other user activities.
Greene revealed that the metaverse platform won’t allow anonymous interactions noting that anonymity “kind of breaks the social construct.”
On NFTs, the PUBG creator noted he isn’t considering incorporating them into the platform saying he’s focusing on “getting some fun games made.” Greene’s revelations come as more traditional entities join the blockchain gaming world.
Ubisoft, Lamborghini, and FIFA Exploring Web3 World
Video game publisher Ubisoft, for example, has in the past announced a web3 game including a free NFT mint.
Former Disney and Marvel employees have also in the past partnered to create a blockchain game publishing platform. Other entities like Lamborghini and FIFA are also exploring the web3 gaming world.
With the PUBG creator joining the metaverse world, it’s to be seen how his platform will differ from existing platforms created by the likes of Yuga Labs and Meta.
